Slime and Water Molds, Protista

Slime molds and water molds are traditionally placed within Protista and include several distinct groups with unique life cycles and reproductive strategies. Although modern taxonomy has reassigned many of these organisms, the classical divisions Myxomycota, Acrasiomycota, and Oomycota remain useful for describing their morphology and development.

Plasmodial Slime Molds (Myxomycota)

Plasmodial, or acellular, slime molds are phagocytic organisms that exist as large multinucleate masses called plasmodia. These plasmodia eventually form fruiting bodies that release spores. When the spores germinate, they produce myxamoebae and swarm cells, both of which are capable of fusing to re‑establish the plasmodial stage. This alternation between amoeboid cells and a multinucleate plasmodium is characteristic of Myxomycota.

Cellular Slime Molds (Acrasiomycota)

Cellular slime molds are also phagocytic but differ from plasmodial forms by maintaining distinct cells throughout most of their life cycle. When food becomes scarce, the cells secrete cyclic AMP, causing them to aggregate into a multicellular mass known as a pseudoplasmodium. This structure differentiates into prestalk and prespore regions, eventually forming a fruiting body called a sorocarp. The sorocarp contains a sorus, which produces spores that disperse and germinate into new amoeboid cells.

Water Molds (Oomycota)

Water molds, placed in the division Oomycota, possess hyphae with cellulose rather than chitin in their cell walls, distinguishing them from true fungi. Sexual reproduction occurs when an egg cell fuses with a sperm cell to form a zygote. Many water molds are important decomposers or plant pathogens. Species such as Saprolegnia and Achlya are common in aquatic environments, while several others cause significant plant diseases. Peronospora hyoscyami produces blue mold on tobacco plants, Phytophthora infestans is responsible for potato late blight, and Plasmopara viticola causes grape downy mildew. These organisms illustrate the ecological and agricultural importance of Oomycota.
